Personal profile

Personal Statement

My role is to undertake university-wide initiatives to improve learning and teaching at Strathclyde. My work is currently focused on using the TESTA methodology to support departments in making improvements to assessment and feedback at programme level. I am also the committee manager for the Learning Enhancement Committee, whose remit is to support innovation and good practice in learning and teaching across the University.

Before arriving at Strathclyde in 2015 I led the Higher Education Academy’s (now Advance HE) work on student surveys, including: the development of the UK Engagement Survey; providing advice and consultancy to institutions across the UK on using the National Student Survey for the enhancement of learning and teaching; and developing and reporting on the HEPI/HEA Student Academic Experience Survey. Prior to that I taught applied and professional ethics at the University of Leeds, after receiving a PhD in philosophy from the same institution in 2008.

My research interests are in student engagement, student surveys and assessment and feedback. I have refereed for Studies in Higher EducationAssessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, Higher Education Policy and Quality in Higher Education.
