The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering has a unique combination of multi-disciplinary expertise including civil, environmental, chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering plus materials science, geoscience, physics, chemistry and
microbiology.
Its world-class research portfolio includes leadership of international and multi-institutional research consortia in close collaboration with both industry and government.

The Department's researchers work across three main interdisciplinary centres:-

Centre for Ground Engineering & Energy Geoscience

Our researchers have expertise in a range of different disciplines, including:

-ground barrier technologies
-experimental geomechanics
-geotechnical engineering

-site investigation
-structural geology
-hydrogeology
-constitutive & numerical modelling of geomaterials

Centre for Intelligent Infrastructure

We are committed to transforming traditional structural engineering through cross-disciplinary research, recognising and transposing the recent radical innovations in material science, communication and sensor technology.

Centre for Water, Environment, Sustainability & Public Health

We undertake fundamental and applied research to provide novel solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges, working both locally and internationally.
