Data for the project: "Supporting Academic Literacies Development for Mature Students in Scottish Initial Teacher Education"

This data set contains materials from the "Supporting Academic Literacies Development for Mature Students in Scottish Initial Teacher Education" project, funded by the Carnegie Trust for Scotland, Research Incentive Grant 013264.

There are two types of data in the data set: anonymised quantitative writing profile tool data and focus group transcripts. The anonymised quantitative data can be made available to other researchers upon request after 30 June 2027. Please email such requests to Dr Rebekah Sims, [email protected], on or after 30 June 2027. Focus group transcripts cannot be made public per ethical approval from the host institution.

Writing Profile Tool Data

This data was gathered from PGDE students at 6 Scottish universities at the beginning and end of their PGDE course (academic year 2024-2025) via an online questionnaire. This part of the study investigated how students enrolled in Scotland’s Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) perceived their ability to complete course-related written assessments, both at the beginning and end of the programme. “The PGDE Writing Profile Tool” focused on self-reported strengths and weaknesses across four domains of academic writing: academic, social, environmental, and emotional. 183 students took this tool, 35 of whom provided a follow-up response at the end of the course.

The data is contained in one spreadsheet. The writing profile tool questions and profiles are also included and can similarly be requested from myself, from 30 June 2027. Please see the "Data Set Description" document for details about making requests for access.

Focus Group Data

This focus group data set consists of transcripts from 9 focus groups held at four PGDE programmes in Scotland, during the academic year 2024-2025.
