Description

The WJEC is the largest international conference for journalism academics and is held every three years. I presented a paper with Dr Ann Luce of Bournemouth University on Suicide Reporting: We need to teach it better, using RSR ethical storytelling model.
Abstract:
After surveying 229 journalism students in the UK and Ireland we concluded they enter the workplace with a rudimentary knowledge of suicide reporting guidelines. We suggest journalism academics concentrate on storytelling, thus placing students and educators in the familiar ground of journalism practice. To assist we created the Responsible Suicide Reporting (RSR) model, formed from Duncan’s five narrative model of stories about grief reflecting different stages in the bereaved’s lives and Luce’s four simple rules of responsible reporting. We postulate that by producing stories using the RSR model students would have a more interactive and absorbing experience of suicide reporting.
