Description

VOICE OF YOUNG SCIENCE
Standing up for Science online workshop

A panel comprising a researcher with media experience, a journalist and a press officer will share their experiences of engaging with the media and the public. They will discuss why researchers should care about how evidence is used and reported on and share their advice and top tips for helping researchers to work with the media and engage with the public. On our panel will be: David Shukman, Science Editor at the BBC; Professor Sheena Cruikshank, Professor of Immunology and Academic Lead of Public Engagement, University of Manchester; Chris Theobald, Strategic Communications Manager, University of Central
Lancashire

Public Engagement: a practical guide
We will introduce Sense about Science’s unique practical guide for researchers on involving the public in working out how to communicate findings – from the earliest stages of projects and on the most challenging of subjects. It draws on our experience of working with researchers on socially or scientifically difficult issues of public interest.

Zooming Out: Scoping the public discussion
Having confidence in your own expertise can be daunting. This practical exercise in breakout rooms will use insights from the guide to get you to take a bird’s eye view of your own field, to really get you thinking about just how wide your knowledge is. Understanding this will help you to scope out the areas where you can contribute to the public debate.

What policymakers are looking for
This session will focus on how evidence is used in policy, how facts, values and public opinion are balanced in policymaking, how policymakers deal with a lack of good evidence, trade-offs and polarised debates, and how researchers can get involved in policy discussions. On our panel will be: Dr Louise Dyson, Associate Professor in Epidemiology, University of Warwick; Jessica Smith, Senior Research Principal (Population Health), Greater Manchester Combined Authority; Martin Smith, Policy and Advocacy Manager, Wellcome Trust
