Using Social Media Posts as Prompts to ChatGPT to Produce Tailored Privacy Advice for People Going Through Life Transitions

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Presented a poster at BASS'23 to gauge audience opinions on the potential privacy risks of utilising participant data as prompts to ChatGPT.

Abstract: People who experience life transitions such as ‘coming out’ or breaking up with a partner often do not consider the impact of sharing information online. Furthermore, they may not have the digital skills necessary to guarantee their online privacy settings are stringent enough to prevent leakage to unintended publics. Social media platforms are one resource for these populations to receive advice from peers on how to navigate online space safely. Yet people going through a transition may be misled by inaccurate counsel or by those with differing life experiences. We propose the implementation of ChatGPT to develop a new dataset from existing Reddit Forums on life transitions that may be used to embed accurate and personalised advice in privacy enhancing tools. Diverse stories from target transition groups will be scraped from Reddit and assessed for accuracy in terms of threats/risks and the privacy actions taken. Key information from appropriate stories will be fed into ChatGPT as prompts to generate entirely new narratives, thus ensuring we do not directly share information that may be identifiable. The resulting stories will be evaluated with transition group members to determine whether they are relatable and can assist users to apply their desired privacy settings.
