The Printmaking Workshop Series: 02

Activity: Presenting or Organising an EventConference, workshop, seminar or course

Description

Following the success of the first printmaking workshop, a second session in the series was delivered, offering students another opportunity to explore hands-on, experimental printmaking. Building on the introductory skills covered previously, this workshop continued to guide students through the process of developing ideas from quick sketches into printed artworks using accessible materials and simple tools.

Students learned the basics of relief printing, including transferring designs, carving, inking, and printing by hand, while experimenting with mark-making, texture, layering, and colour to explore how each decision shapes the final image. A key development in this second workshop was the introduction of reduction printmaking using linoleum, a more advanced technique that allows for multi-layered colour prints to be created from a single carved block. Through multiple stages of carving and printing, students investigated how the intentional removal of material can generate depth, rhythm, and complexity.

The workshop maintained a strong emphasis on process, play, and experimentation, inviting students to embrace mistakes as part of the creative journey. By the end of the session, students produced a small collection of prints that reflected their own visual style and gained greater confidence in exploring both foundational and more advanced printmaking techniques.
