The Ethical Responsibility of Educator as Pedagogical Reducer

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

Pedagogical Reduction, while an inevitable process – or central feature – in education, is a concept that is remains elusive across education discourse in the anglophone world. While one can point to the influence of its counterparts in German (didaktische reduktion) and French (la transposition didactique) theory, it is little explored in English/US/Australian research. The little work that has been done has endeavoured to delineate the concept, but there is an underlying suspicion among philosophers and theorists that a concept which seeks to reduce cannot be easily reconciled with another that aims for nurturing and growth. This is indeed an ethical concern that this paper will address, in the peripheral act of identifying the ethical issues that could occur during each step of the process: selection, simplification and representation.
