Description
I was given the opportunity to design and deliver a session as part of the practice learning days for Masters' students in Social Work. Further details on the structure and intent of the session are provided in the abstract below:This session intends to bring awareness of the potential benefits and possibilities Art Based Pedagogies (ABP) and Art Based methods can carry in Social Work education, research, and in the professional realm to ‘re-humanise’ the curriculum and provide (future) social workers with critical skills and qualities aligning with the unpredictable nature of Social work itself.
Placing an accent on ‘the Arts’ will serve to introduce the Photovoice method and its applicability in research and beyond. The session will then merge into a workshop where you will be guided through and offered the opportunity to directly experience one of the photographic activities framing that of Photovoice - and hopefully the rewards that comes with making, sharing and discussing visual works collectively too.
Eliciting self-reflection on the transformative potential of Photovoice will serve to introduce the obstacles Parents with Learning Disabilities face to becoming parents in the UK today, starting with an overview of the historical origins and corresponding attitudes behind what we know as ‘Learning Disability’ in a contemporary context. It will end by focusing on the use of photography when working with people and parents with Learning Disabilities, and the ways in which image making has been put forward as a tool to amplify participatory research opportunities, enact ‘social change’ and disrupt the misconceptions they face as a group.
