As part of the first Science @ Strathclyde, I helped present and deliver a STEM outreach activity focused around cryptography. This outreach activity was delivered to forty S3 pupils from 8 schools across Glasgow, and was one of many outreach activities that took place in different departments across the Faculty of Science. The cryptography activity itself focused on the history of cryptography, such as the efforts of Alan Turing and the team at Bletchley Park in cracking the Enigma Code used in WWII. The pupils had fun in encrypting and decrypting messages using Caesar ciphers and also learning about modern cryptography, such as RSA public-key cryptography systems.
