This RSC Invited Andy Parkin Lecture 2025 explored plastic pollution as a case study in science communication drawing on extensive international, interdisciplinary funded research in the UK, EU, Indonesia and Nigeria. I addressed the interlinked areas of science, public health, and environmental communications and argued that in the current landscape of misinformation and disinformation we must prioritise the cultural context of plastics use and the role of communications in behaviour change.
