Participatory Filmmaking with Refugee Young People

In this presentation, I reflect on participatory filmmaking with 'youths at risk' through the lens of 'an ethics of care' (Noddings 2013; 1984). I argue that an 'ethics of care' view helps us to navigate what Dennis (2015) calls the 'current sector creep towards instrumentalising arts for social agendas' (p. 321). It frames the purpose of arts education within a relational approach that emphasises 'presence, engrossment in the other and a desire for the other's wellbeing [and with that their autonomy & self-governance]' (Noddings 1984: 19) - and provokes a critical examination of the concept and language of social change when arts education is put in the service of (the externally defined goals of) 'amelioration', of 'giving access', 'social inclusion' or 'giving voice'.
