Description

Boosting Stroke Recovery with Technology Enriched Rehabilitation Gyms
Dr Andy Kerr (Senior Lecturer, University of Strathclyde)
One in four people will have a stroke in their lifetime with the majority of survivors left with disability. But there's hope! The brain has the capacity to recover function by rewiring the estimated 100 trillion connections between brain cells. This process is improved with rehabilitation that is intensive and stimulating. Unfortunately, not everyone who needs this type of rehab can get it due to limitations in our healthcare systems. Our research group are co-creating a new approach to rehabilitation, integrating technology like virtual reality and robotics in a user led way. This can be seen in our technology enriched rehabilitation gyms at Strathclyde University and NHS Lanarkshire.
