Description

Our Shared Future – Developing Our Joint Pathway for Equitable and Impactful Partnerships in Africa, will focus on the role of Higher Education in supporting development in African nations whether engaged with higher education counterparts or private, public and third sector organisations. Planned over two days, the first will be open to all interested parties with a focus on a wider dialogue for higher education and other sectors operating in Africa. The second day will be a closed door event (a) offering a platform to consult with our African partners and our colleagues on the development of an African Strategy for the University, and (b) to provide space and time to develop and expand collaborations in key focal areas.

The objective of this event is to:
1. Shape future collaborations by examining the role of higher education in Africa’s development and exploring strategies for future partnerships.
2. Reinforce Strathclyde's commitment to being an equal and ethical partner to African nations, aligned with its broader Africa Strategy.
3. Celebrate and reflect on the over 30-year partnership between Strathclyde and Malawi, highlighting the significant contributions made in fields like health, education, and renewable energy.
4. Use the occasion of the joint 60th anniversaries of Strathclyde and Malawi to underscore the historical ties and shared goals between the University and its African partners.
5. Provide a platform for African voices to share their perspectives and ambitions, contributing to the future of international collaboration in higher education and development

Our open day one event will feature keynote speeches, including from Joyce Msuya, the UN Acting Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief, Cabinet Secretary Mr Angus Robertson from the Scottish Government, and Justice Agnes Patemba, Deputy High Commissioner for Malawi High Commission in the UK. The day will also include a panel discussion the role of higher education in development in Africa, and an opportunity to showcase the University’s legacy and plans through our collabirations in Malawi and the One Ocean Hub. This will culminate in a reception at the Glasgow City Chambers for our invited guests and participants.

On day 2, our morning session will provide an open forum for engagement and discussion on the principles and focus of our partnerships and collaborations between our visiting researchers from across Africa and staff at Strathclyde. The afternoon will allow for more focused time on specific research areas, where we hope to engage a wide range of research interests and career stages in the discussions.

The audience will include academics, project partners, NGOs, policymakers, and African colleagues, engaging both in person and remotely.
