Description
I have been an independent foster panel member for Foster Care Associates since 2007 and have been Vice Chair for 3 years and Chair for the past 3 years. This involves reading assessments for prospective carers and asking questions that arise from these assessments to the applicants at the panel. As Chair I ensure that all relevant statutory checks have been covered and prior to the panel and assist the panel to formulate questions. The role involves ensuring that applicants meet all the required fostering competencies and requires us to see existing foster carers in person after their 1st review and then every 3 year to ensure that the competencies continue to be met. Part of my role involves signing and approving the minutes and we also see foster carers if any allegations are made and decide whether we feel they can continue to care or require to be deregistered. This also involves making decisions as to whether referrals requires to be made to the PVG scheme to decide whether they can continue to work with children. I attend the independent panel Chairs Forum organised by AFA (formerly BASW) where we share good practice across the country and receive legal updates.
