The initial phase of this training week involved understanding the concepts and theory relating to properties of pharmaceutical compounds. In particular, laboratory sessions were undertaken in formulation studies encompassing dissolution, tableting, mechanical determination and direct compression. Sessions on pharmaceutical solid state engineering from molecular to material self assembly were also taken. Practical work on the operation of a continuous oscillatory baffled crystalliser (COBC) were carried through performing continuous seeded cooling crystallisation of a particular API. This primarily involved crystal seed preparation and characterisation, operation of a COBC and tableting of the API into an acceptable formulated product with analysis of the final tablet.
