Activity: Public Engagement and Outreach › Public Events
Description
The event was part of an updated series of "cupcake science" workshops that Dr Lau has been leading around Scotland. The workshop involves members of the Lau research group engaging in live tabletop demonstrations. The aim is to enable young people to perform simple chemistry activities that introduce them to basic biochemistry concepts behind the baking of (cup)cakes. The learning topics include the molecular nature of proteins and how the fluffy cake structure full of gas pockets is created. Where suitable, free cupcakes are also given away as tasty souvenirs for participants to remember the event by. On this day, the group demonstrated at Thorntree and Oakwood Primary Schools in Glasgow city as part of the Explorathon 2017 science festival.
