Attuning to Slow Time: Sonic Art, Poetics and Performing Somnolence

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

We will deliver a performance lecture which takes ‘somnolence’, the desire for sleep, as its proposition for digital disengagement. Drawing on authors such as Jonathan Crary, Johanna Hedva and Jackie Wang, we will explore how orientating creative-critical thought towards sleep might short-circuit the distraction economy of digital overwhelm which has come to dominate society and consciousness. By attending to dream logics and ambience, we carve out time in artistic and quotidian practice to resist the atrophying effects of what Crary calls the ‘24/7’ of capitalism’s nonstop demand. Our specific practices of poetics and sound art will inform how the body, duration and senses are woven together to explore what kinds of (im)possible thinking and feeling can be mobilised to survive the present and move towards more ecological futures.

We also contributed audiovisual materials and printed matter to the conference exhibition.
