Description

Biography: Dr. Arjan Buis received his Prosthetic and Orthotic training in the Netherlands. Ever since, Dr. Buis has been working in the rehabilitation field, namely as a workshop manager at the African Leprosy and Rehabilitation Training Centre, after having been selected by the Ducth Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the overseas post. Afterwards, he was involved in the developmental study of new materials and surgical techniques in orthopaedics for civilian war victims. Dr. Arjan Buis completed his PhD education in 1997 and is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics at Strathclyde University Glasgow. About the lecture: Unfortunately, there are more and more situations, either civil or medical, that require the unrelenting development in the new materials field. This situation presents us with a constant demand towards keeping up with the latest techniques and devices and taking into account patients’ conditions, comorbidities and social background in order to provide them with the best care available and improve their life quality. It is of the utmost importance that we improve our understanding on the biomechanical mechanisms that contribute to the generation and control of load transfer forces, especially when the subject "where man meets machine" and the area of prosthetic socket fit are becoming a stronger and more reliable possibility for treatment. This lecture will reveal the potential that lies in technologically improved rehabilitation, focusing on the development of specific prosthetic components using alternative “smart” materials and composites.
