AI and worker wellbeing – is it the time of the iWorker?

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

Location: Online
Worker wellbeing is increasingly on the agenda for the contemporary (caring)
employer. Wellbeing initiatives range from the provision of discounted private
healthcare and employer funded counselling through to resilience and mindfulness training and/or activities. While much of the focus is on individual workers, it is also important to acknowledge the material circumstances of workers, including those that employers have control over, such as the organisation, distribution and location of labour. For example, it might seem obvious to many of us, that minimizing exposure to boring, monotonous and/or hazardous work might have a positive impact on worker wellbeing.
It has long been lauded that the development of robotics technology and artificial
intelligence could, and should, relieve human workers of the above repetitive tasks.
However, there does not seem to be a dramatic reduction in roles and tasks that
could be outsourced to machines. Instead, some technological advances are used in Human Resources processes that are not associated with wellbeing, but instead with discipline and surveillance.
In this talk we will reflect on existing and future technologies, workers’ rights and
discuss how and why new technologies are being used as they are, and what
potential they have to maximise worker wellbeing and how we can actualize it.
