Description

Stress relaxation and distortion during manufacturing of high value components

Designing microstructure of high value components with tailored mechanical properties for high temperature applications, require sequential thermo-mechanical processing. This often includes straining and annealing at solution annealing temperatures followed by controlled cooling and subsequent aging heat treatments at lower temperatures. The aging heat treatment partially relieve the residual stress generated at previous stages of manufacturing, however the stress field will not be completely relaxed. This needs to be measured and considered for later stages of manufacturing (e.g., machining) to achieve parts within required dimensional tolerances. This presentation summarises few case-studies on the measurement and empirical modelling of stress relaxation, and also quantification of springback, for implementation in process modelling.
